Lilly Singh's Apology Has People Divided
03 October 2019
YouTuber and comedian, Lilly Singh has recently come under fire on social media after making an off-colour joke where she likened turbans to bath towels. She has since apologised, which has only caused the backlash to grow even more as many people have come out shaming her for feeling the need to apologise over a harmless joke.
During the first taping she had ever done for the show, Lilly's guest was telling a story about the time her kids had felt embarassed after Lilly had seen them with towels wrapped around their heads, to which Lilly replied with an off-the-cuff joke about being used to it because of her Punjabi friends. The audience, and the guest, laughed along with Lilly as the show went on. It seemed as if most people didn't care about what had been said, but it turned out that there were a small number of people on Twitter who were upset with Lilly over the joke, labelling it as insensitive and gross.
Shortly after the backlash began, Lilly took to her Twitter to issue a lengthy apology to those she had offended, making it known that she was doing all that was in her power to have the joke removed from the episode of her show, along with all online clips. She gave the excuse of it being her first ever taping and she was nervous as the reason for the 'slip up'.
But despite her good intentions when issuing her apology, Lilly only ended up receiving more backlash, this time from the people holding different views from those who were offended by the joke in the first place. This new wave of backlash came from people who were upset that Lilly had felt the need to apologise for telling a 'harmless joke'.
As far as my opinion goes, I think that Lilly should have just stuck with her guns. Comedy should have no limits. Yes, people will be offended, but that's what happens with comedy. It's not serious, it's all just jokes. It is not supposed to be taken seriously or personally. In addition, I feel that the only reason she even apologised was to save face. If she actually had an issue with that sort of joke, then she wouldn't have told it in the first place.
